Parenting Tips on How You Can Raise a Responsible Child
Raising a responsible child must be nurtured early with plenty of hard work and patience We seemed to be facing the problem of a growing number of irresponsible children joining the society nowadays. Raising a responsible child takes a lot of hard works and patience on your part as a responsible parent. Leaving your child in the hands of your maid or nanny or even in some unqualified day-care centers is not helping to improve the situation. As a responsible parent, you need to take the time or make the time to teach your child about responsibility as he grows from the very day that he was born into this world and not wait until he has turned to become a teenager, when he is ever ready to rebel and to fight against authority. If you do this, you can be assured that you will have a responsible teenager sooner than you would think. As the saying goes, there is no free lunch in this world; you need to put in your time and efforts in order to get the results that you want. What you reap is what you sow. < Amongst others, the four elements described below will help your child to build responsibility as his character trait that he will carry with him for the rest of his life. a. Teaching him to take good care of his possession and to do his own stuff This is an important element of responsibility. Toddler and even very young child can learn to put his toys away, put his clothes in the laundry basket, and put his dirty dishes in the sink. You can explain to him that belongings like toys and clothes last longer if he takes good care of them. Make sure there are areas around your home for him to store his belongings - a toy box, a toddler level coat hook, etc - and teach him to put things back where they belong. Allow your child to do his own things like wearing his shoes, wearing his shirts and pants, putting his shoes onto the shoes rack, feeding himself by holding his own folks and spoons, etc. as he needs to learn to depend on his own self to get things done rather than depending on others. Be sure that you model this behavior as well as your child will be learning from you by imitating your every behavior perceivable by him. If you have a maid or nanny or helper, do not ask your maid or nanny or helper to do everything for him thinking that you are loving your child; however, you are actually spoiling your child as your child will eventually master the arts of dependency and he would have to depend on others to get things done for him. b. Including him in household chores whenever possible Initially your child will create a mess rather than helping you out with the chores. But if you never give him a chance to try out, he will grow up not knowing how to do them and worse still not wanting to do them. Show them how to rinse dishes, stir ingredients, and pick vegetables from the garden. Children are more likely to try a new food that they have helped to prepare, so this may also be a great way to get them to eat their vegetables. Get the child-sized toy broom, vacuum cleaners, etc for your child to use. Even the youngest child can "clean" with plain water and a rag. c. Giving him something to be responsible for It may be wise to consider getting him a small pet, such as fish, hermit crab, or hamster, when your child has grown slightly older. Your child should have the responsibility over the pet. You can help only when very necessary. Pets are excellent tools to enable your child to learn about responsibility and caring for others, and pets will help your child learns these skills. Your child must be old enough to understand that the animal is dependent on him for food and shelter. d. Teaching him about money Teaching your child financial responsibility may well be the best investment you ever take. So you need to take the time or make the time to teach your child about money as soon as he becomes interested. Show him the different denominations of bills and coins, and let him decides how to spend money that he receives as gifts. Give opportunity to your child to enjoy putting small change into his piggy bank, and this teaches him about saving money. You need to make him understand that money is not limitless, and that he has to prioritize his spending according to his needs. In teaching our child, sometimes we are too preoccupied with being punitive and not enough with being positive. When they are naughty or grab a toy from another child, we would admonish them by saying that God would punish them by burning them in hell. Such concepts are beyond the comprehension of young minds, except to imprint on them horror-filled images of suffering and torture. A more understandable and thus effective way would be to teach those children to imagine how they would feel if someone were to steal their toys. Such an approach would also be an excellent way to impart upon them the Golden Rule, "To do unto others what you want done unto you; Not to do unto others what you do not want done unto you", a basic precept in all faiths. Giving birth to a child is easy though with great pains but raising a responsible child who will be useful to society takes lots of hard work and patience. As a responsible parent, you need to take or make the time to teach your child as soon as he landed on this planet, and you will have a responsible teenager who will grow up to be a responsible human being and be useful to the society.
