Hobo Nickel

One of the most exciting coins to collect is the Hobo nickel. It is literally a work of art on the face of a nickel (or other small coinage). The hobo nickel is a regular nickel that has been taken by an "artist" (either professional or amateur) and has changed the engraving on it.

For example, one of the most popular canvases for a Hobo nickel was the buffalo nickel. Also known as the Indian Head nickel, this particular coin has been changed to represent many things other than a buffalo or a native American. An engraver in his spare time will literally carve away at the nickel until a completely new image is permanently fixed onto the coin. Many of these coins are extremely professional in nature and are very collectible.

The name "Hobo" nickel really is just a nickname that came along with the process. Probably because this work of art is typically done on coins of smaller value and therefore they are very portable, like a hobo was. The actual practice of changing the way a penny, dime, nickel, quarter, or other coinage has been practiced for hundreds of years, and these pieces can be found throughout history.

However, this artform really took off during the years of 1913-1938 which is the year the buffalo nickel was in circulation. This nickel was probably used a lot because of its large face size and the ease in which the metal could be engraved upon.

The likelihood of finding such a Hobo Nickel in circulation is quite slim; however, if you ever see a nickel that has a different face on it...keep it! You might have found a valuable collectible.
